Stephen Johnson: How Shostakovich Changed my Mind

Monday 13th May 2024 , 3:00 pm 4:00 pm

Author, composer and BBC music broadcaster Stephen Johnson joins us to discuss the great composer Dimitri Shostakovich, drawing on his book How Shostakovich Changed My Mind. This ‘sharply perceptive and fascinating’ book explores the power of Shostakovich’s work during Stalin’s reign of terror, delving into the extraordinary healing effect of music on those who suffer from mental illness.

Drawing on neurological, psychotherapeutic and philosophical findings, and reflecting on his own experience with Shostakovich’s music, Stephen’s work is a reaffirmation of a kind of humanist miracle: that hope could be reborn in a time when, to quote the writer Nadezhda Mandelstam, there was only ‘Hope against Hope’.
