Sonnets & Sonatas

An evening of words, music and conversation, including works by Brahms, Ethel Smyth and Clara Schumann along with Mark Burrows’ brand new translation of Rainer Maria Rilke’s lyrical Sonnets to Orpheus.

Premium Experience tickets (limited availability) offer a full evening of cultural immersion, including the opportunity to meet the artists at their pre-concert talk, with a glass of sparkling wine and a selection of canapés at The Griffin’s stylish Assembly Room, across the road from St Mary’s Church.

Please note that The Assembly Room has no wheelchair access. 
Access is via a wide, even staircase with handrails.

5.30pm Doors open at The Griffin
6pm Mark, Cristian and John in Conversation — a glass of sparkling wine on arrival and a selection of canapés
7pm Doors open at St Mary’s Church
7.30pm Concert — a bar will be available before the concert and during the interval

Concert Only tickets start from £15 (free for Under 16s)


Interspersed with readings from Sonnets to Orpheus, the concert programme will include:

Brahms Scherzo in C minor (from the F-A-E Sonata)
Clara Schumann Three Romances for violin and piano, Op.22
Ethel Smyth Violin Sonata in A minor, Op. 7
Amy Beach Romance for violin and piano, Op. 23
Fauré Violin Sonata No. 1 in A major, Op. 13
