Mozart’s Horn Concerto and Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony – Ben Goldscheider and City of London Sinfonia

Sunday 11th February 2018, 7:30 pm

FESTIVAL FINALE

City of London Sinfonia
Jessica Cottis (conductor)
Ben Goldscheider (horn)

Mendelssohn – Hebrides Overture
Mozart – Horn Concerto No.4 in Eb Major
Mendelssohn – Italian Symphony

The stellar players of the City of London Sinfonia perform a programme bringing together two of the greatest child prodigies who ever lived, Mozart and Mendelssohn. After the evergreen overture that Mendelssohn wrote inspired by a trip to Scotland, Ben Goldscheider, recent finalist in BBC Young Musician of the Year, is the soloist in Mozart’s effervescent 4th horn concerto. The concert, and festival, culminates in a performance of another holiday-inspired work by Mendelssohn – the joyous symphony named after his travels in Italy.

About the Artists

City of London Sinfonia (CLS) is made up of over 40 outstanding professional musicians, who come together in the shared belief that music has the power to transform people across all areas of society. CLS give over 75 performances every year anywhere from an East London club to international concert halls, cathedrals and opera houses. The orchestra spend over 150 days every year in schools where social background often creates a barrier to creativity and ambition; hospitals for young people with severe and challenging conditions; and with older people dealing with loss of loved ones and memory.

CLS pride themselves on providing the highest-quality music alongside an equally-valued ‘seriously informal’ performance that removes the barriers between musicians and audiences so that people can experience the transformative power of music.

Described as a musical Bear Grylls (Huffington Post), Ben Goldscheider has quickly emerged as one of the most exciting horn players of his generation. Winner of the Brass Category Final of the 2016 BBC Young Musician Competition, Ben went on reach the concerto finals at London’s Barbican Hall, where he performed Strauss Horn Concerto No. 2 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Mark Wigglesworth. In the same year, Ben took up a sought after place at the Barenboim-Said Academy in Berlin, where he studies with Radek Baborák.
