Academy of Ancient Music & Rowan Pierce (soprano)

Thursday 8th February 2018, 1:00 pm

The Academy of Ancient Music are renowned worldwide for their stylish and spirited performances. Joined here by rising star soprano, Rowan Pierce (winner of this year’s Grange International Singing Competition), they present some of the greatest solo cantatas by Bach alongside two concertos by Vivaldi, the Italian composer he admired so deeply, to create an irresistible programme of Baroque masterpieces.

Programme

Bach – Ich geh und such mit Verlangen
Vivaldi – Concerto for strings in G minor
Bach – Weichet nur betrubte Schatten
Vivaldi – Concerto for Oboe in A minor
Bach – Meine herze schwimmt im blut

About the Artists

The ground-breaking Academy of Ancient Music was formed in 1973 by the renowned scholar-conductor Christopher Hogwood. The orchestra revolutionised the musical world with its historically-informed approach, performing baroque and classical music as it would have been heard in its original time. Today the AAM, under the leadership of Music Director Richard Egarr, continues to take inspiration from the composers themselves through meticulous research, performing on authentic period instruments and using rst edition scores.

Yorkshire born soprano Rowan Pierce has appeared on the concert platform throughout Europe and in South America. She has performed with ensembles including the Academy of Ancient Music, Gabrieli Consort, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Florilegium and the London Handel Players.

She has worked with leading interpreters including Richard Egarr, Paul McCreesh, Laurence Cummings, Christopher Glynn, Roger Vignoles, Malcolm Martineau and will work with Stephen Layton, Robert Howarth, William Christie and the OAE in coming months.

As a Britten Pears Young Artist, she performed Drusilla in Monteverdi’s  L’incoronazione di Poppea; she is a Samling artist; and was generously supported by the Countess of Munster Award and Midori Nishiura at the RCM. In 2017 she was awarded the President’s Award by HRH Prince of Wales.
